Frequent Questions About Nadism

1. WHAT EXACTLY IS NADISM?

Nadism is a social movement that proposes a new approach of using the time in which moments doing nothing become truly valued.

In this sense, it is a significant agent of cultural change becouse it creates awareness of the importance of free and uncommitted time. And it promotes the pleasure of just enjoying these moments with no haste, guilt or stress.

However, the nadism proposal as a better ideal of human life should not be confused with a philosophy because its approach is essentially pragmatic, for example, its meaning is justified primarily through practice.

Thus, the nadism, through Nadism Club, intends to promote the enjoyment of the experience of taking breaks to do nothing as a way to provide better quality of living.

This is the essence of nadism: the art of enjoying moments doing nothing.

2. HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR THE NADISM CLUB?

I've being working since 1998 with the creation and design. In my haste to accomplish so many ideas, I embarked on a high stressful and accelerated pace of life tha just lead me to have a physical and mental breakdown, a burnout. From there my inspiration directed to the welfare and living well. In 2005, after an experience in London, I realized that the essence of the problem of addiction on the accelerated life is the exclusion of the do nothing as a natural human activity (inactivity). Hence the Nadism was created as a means to recover the value of these moments of pause. Then I began to promote the Nadism Club meetings throughout Brazil which soon gained thousands of fans and a tremendous attention from the press.

3. DO PEOPLE HAVE TO PAY TO BE PART OF THE CLUB?

Anyone can join the club for free. The participation on the events, the App and the e-book are also free.

4. IN A SOCIETY IN WHICH WE ARE BOMBARDED BY INFORMATION ON EACH MINUTE, HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO STOP COMPLETELY AND TO DO NOTHING?

By joying the Nadism Club! This is the easiest way because the club offers kind of protection, a conceptual support. It's like a neutral area, outside of the war where you can indulge, reder yourself with no risk.

Another good way is to purposefully create gaps in the schedule. For example, you have an appointment that ends at 3PM, you know you need 30 minutes to get to the next, so instead of marking it to 3:30 PM, check for 4PM. 3:30PM Come and enjoy this half hour to sit in a lawn and watch the clouds for half an hour, it will seem an eternity!

For workaholics and hurried, for people who just can not stop and settle down for an instant I suggest scheduling the Nadism workshop.

We really need to relearn how to stop doing and to practicing Nadism is a good start!

5. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE AMONG SLOW MOVEMENT, THE CREATIVE IDELNESS AND MANY OTHER ESTABLISHED APPROACHES IN THE WORLD?

The Nadism resembles other movements to promote a better life style, less rapid with more quality. However, given the context of the socio economic cultural acceleration we can say that it is more practical and affordable. For example, the difficulty of slow proposal is that if you just decide to go slower you will lag behind because society and the labor market imposes certain productive rhythm that needs to be followed to ensure competitiveness. Otherwise, creative idleness is a concept somewhat utopian because presupposes that the person has naturally much free time, which in fact does not occur, and that they can not enjoy it as a creative leisure.

In nadism you follow your life the way it is, but you learn to create pauses. Brief moments especially dedicated to do nothing that can be anywhere, anytime and for any length of time. Thus, even 10 minutes a day already impacts positively on improving the quality of life.

6. HOW TO PROPOSE TO SOMEONE TO DO NOTHING IN A COUNTRY WITH THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC PROBLEMS OF BRAZIL? DO YOU MUST YOU BE RICH?

It is a cultural issue which is based on the values of the individual and not in your bank account.

My experience has shown that regardless of social class or activity people are engaged, they live the same fast and stressful pace.

Who becomes aware that is living on the edge and looking for a way to change their life style, nadism is located in an accessible way, since doing nothing is free, has no prerequisites or contraindication.

7. CURRENT PREACHING IS THAT WE MUST BE MORE COMPETITIVE, PRODUCTIVE ETC. ISN'T NADISM IS A CONTRADICTION IN THESE TERMS?

This concept of total quality and productivity serves very well for companies and is perfect for robots that can work 24 hours without stopping and without freaking out. We human beings need something more than working and meeting deadlines; we need time for ourselves, time to rest, time to enjoy the things that make life worth living and being with friends and family, health care and have fun.

A good question to ask is: do we live to work or do we work to live?

8. WHAT IS THE AMBASSADORS CLUB? HOW MANY ARE? WHERE ARE THEY? DO PEOPLE EARN TO DO IT?

With the Nadism Club growing many people have shown interest in having the meetings in their cities. So we created the opportunity to register interested ambassadors and then being responsible for organizing these events. On the website there is information on how to participate.

It is a voluntary action so the payment is the satisfaction of promoting something that will make a better world.

However, to promote the expansion of nadism, we are seeking sponsorship to enable the production of events promotional material. Company focusing on quality of life market that is willing to invest in this opportunity can reap the rewards of positive impact for their brand.

9. WHICH TYPES OF NON-ACTIVITIES THE CONCEP OF NADISM INCLUDES? SLEEP, READ, LISTEN MUSIC, WHAT EXACTLY?

The nadism is 100% doing nothing. Watching TV, doing crossword puzzles and sleeping is doing something.

It is important not to confuse distraction, entertainment, sports or anything that has to be done with nadism that's nothing to do.

The big difference is the nadism devoid of purpose. Every activity in which a person devotes their time considering a defined goal can not be considered nadism. The nadism is pointless and useless by nature.

10. WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN NADISM, LAZYNESS AND GIVING UP?

These issues are addressed in the book.

I can say that laziness doesn't mean to do nothing. Laziness is the opposite will of doing something, which can result sometimes in doing nothing. Giving up is to abandon something you must do. To practice nadism there is no need to quit your job or your commitments, but to create voids between and among them.

11. TALK ABOUT THE BOOK. WHY? WHERE CAN IT BE BOUGHT AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The book is a tool to better understand our involvement with the culture of acceleration and how to acquire a new consciousness of non doing. It is also a motivator to practice nadism.

You can buy the portuguese paper edition through the website: www.clubedenadismo.com.br or at various bookstores in Brazil. The average price is US$ 15,00.

But anyone can download the e-book for free. It is avaliable in portuguese and english.

12. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO NOTHING? HOW CAN I DO IT?

You first need to want it and second to permit yourself. So just give away a spare time and do not mind about anything, just let it happen. The four guidelines of practicing nadism help to get the hang of.

NADISM PRACTICE GUIDELINES

1. STOPNJOY!

This time is totally yours to enjoy doing nothing unhurried.

2. SURRENDER YOURSELF!

Abandon the intention to do something. Forget any goal, nadism has no purpose.

3. Calm down!

Favors silence and immobility.

4. OBSERVE!

Avoid engaging mentally. Let your mind wander like clouds.

13. THERE ARE MANY JOKES ABOUT THE MOVEMENT, AREN'T THERE?

Not much. In the beginning the reaction is in good humor and quirkiness, the next minute, when the clock call for attention at the agenda, soon one realizes how valuable it would be to have his moment of nadism and then they join the club!

Experiencers become fans!

14. HOW TO DO A COMPANY THAT BELIEVES THAT "TIME IS MONEY" TO STOP?

It is a cultural issue which is based on the fundamental values of the individual.

What is more important, change cars or spend two afternoons a week with his son? Go to the movies every weekend experiencing congestion and queues or make a picnic in the garden at home with friends?

Fortunately I realize that many people are starting to wonder about it, to revise their concepts and to seek alternatives. Yet most still follows the crazed pace of "time is money".

How to wake up the society? Let's spread the idea, let's feed it, let's develop it. Start with your own life and the effect will have repercussions on nearby people and so on.

Until people in power become aware to make decisions that effectively bring change, for example, reducing the time of the workday.

15. SPEEDING TIME, LACK OF TIME, STRESS, THIS IS CLEARLY PERCEIVED BY THE SOCIETY. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT HAPPENS THEN, FOR PEOPLE ADD NEGATIVE VALUE TO THE ACT OF DOING NOTHING? WHY TO STOP BRINGING THE FEELING OF GUILT?

Simply because nobody wants to be left behind. In the capitalist system we are running a competition against others who can't afford to "waste time"? We need to be 110% productive, efficient and speedy. This is a concept very good for business and industry, but not for the life of the human being. Even our vital needs aren't being met, we keep without lunch because of the meeting, we burn the midnight oil to complete the work within the agenda.

We feel guilty because we value the work and profit instead of living.

16. WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES AND BENEFITS PARTICIPANTS FACE AT THE NADISM CLUB IN SEEKING CHANGE IN THEIR LIFESTYLE?

The greatest difficulty is effectively stopping. What I mean by effectively is to ABSOLUTLY STOP. To do it completely, with no purpose. Sounds simple but it is quite difficult. People confuse too stop with waiting, distracting theirselves, resting, meditative practice, etc ... So, as the founder and facilitator, I try to instruct the "practice" of nadism through 4 guidelines.

The benefits are many and we can summarize them as a generous increase in quality of life.

Therefore it is important to attend a meeting of Nadism Club, in order to have a real experience of what it is doing nothing good in.

17. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE CAUSE OF THE GROWTH OF THE NADISM CLUB ALL OVER BRAZIL AND ABROAD?

Everybody has the idyllic idea of how good a time to do nothing would be.

Meanwhile the vast majority of people live in an increasingly fast-paced and occupations that exceed the limit of 24 pace. Result, to do nothing becomes the pinnacle of the modern luxury.

People who have become members of the Club are those who have realized that luxury is affordable and it's free. It's called nadism. ;)

18. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PRACTCING NADISM ON HOMEOPATHIC PORTIONS?

The benefits are many and we can summarize them as a generous increase in

quality of life.

19. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MEDITATION AND NADISM?

There is a big difference. While meditation involves many types of techniques that need to be followed to attain mental peace, nadism do not have a technical procedure or an objective. It is just to do nothing and feeling good. Pointless and without concern for the thoughts.

However, by practicing nadism is possible to access "unintentionally" a meditative state. Especially for those who are already on the path of self-knowledge. This can be a nice side effect.
